The Enemy important questions, Class XII The Enemy

Give short answer of the following questions.

1. Why was Dr Sadao not sent to the battlefield ?  
                            Or
Why was Dr Sadao not sent with the troops?
= Dr Sadao was a skilled and famous surgeon who was perfecting a discovery of rendering wounds entirely clean. Moreover, he was treating the old General who could need an operation. So, he was not sent with the troops.

2. What was the chief concern of Dr. Sadao's father ?
= The chief concern of Dr Sadao's father was his education. So, he sent him to America at twenty two to learn all that could be learned of surgery and medicine.

3. Who was Hana ? What did she notice coming out of the mist ?
= Hana was the wife of Dr. Sadao. She noticed something black come out of the mists. It was nothing but a man who was flung up out of the ocean.

4.Why did the messenger come to Dr. Sadao ?
=  The messenger came to Dr. Sadao to inform him that the old General was in pain again and needed Dr. Sadao's immediate attention.

5. Who was Dr. Sadao ? Where was his house ?
= Dr. Sadao was an eminent Japanese surgeon and scientist who went to America at the age twenty two to learn everything about surgery and medicine. Dr. Sadao's house was built on rocks well above a narrow beach that was outlined with bent pines. It was near the Japanese coast.

6. Why did Yumi refuse to wash the wounded man ?
= Yumi refused to wash the dirty wounded man as he was the prisoner of war. She thought that helping an enemy means to be a traitor to the country. Moreover her conscience did not let her to touch a strange person.


7. Why had Hana to wash the wounded man herself ?
= The wounded American was in a very bad state and needed to be washed before being operated. But Hana did not want Dr. Sadao to clean the dirty and unconscious prisoner and so asked their servant Yumi to do so. However, Yumi denied to wash the wounded man. So, for Hana had no other option but to wash him herself.
8. Why did the servant leave Dr. Sadao's house ?
= The servants left Dr. Sadao's house because they did not like the idea of harbouring an enemy in the house by their master. Because the enemy was a prisoner of war who escaped with a bullet in his back. They thought that sheltering an enemy is to betray the country.

9. What was the old gardener's reaction when Dr. Sadao gave shelter to the enemy soldier?
= The old gardener did not like the idea of Sadao's harbouring an enemy. He felt it was unpatriotic to shelter to a prisoner of war. He felt if his master healed what first the gun and then the sea did, they would be avenged.

10. Who sent a messenger to Dr. Sadao ? What for ?
= The old General sent a messenger to Dr. Sadao to inform him that the General was in pain again and needed Dr. Sadao's immediate attention. The General preferred to be treated by Dr. Sadao who had the reputation of being thoroughly professional in his job.

11. Will Dr. Sadao be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy ?
= Dr. Sadao will be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy if anyone complains against him. Because the enemy they sheltered was a prisoner of war who had escaped with a bullet on his back. Since Japan was at war with America, harbouring an enemy means being a traitor for the country.
