Voice Change

 Voices are of two kinds

1) ACTIVE VOICE

2) PASSIVE VOICE

                 ACTIVE VOICE

When the subject in a sentence performs the action of the verb is called Active Voice.

Example:-

i) She is watering the flowers.

ii) He posted the letters.


                      PASSIVE VOICE

When the object in a sentence is done something is called passive voice.

Example

        1. The story was written by her.

        2. The work has been started by me.

Rules for changing an active voice into passive one.

1. The object of an active voice is put in the place of subject in the passive voice.

2. The verbs of the active voice is always put in the form of past participle in the passive voice.

3. The subject of the active voice is placed in the form of object in the passive voice and it is followed by the preposition ' By ' .

4. The pronouns of the active voice are changed in the passive voice as follows.

5. The verbs of the active voice are changed in the passive voice as follows.

If the active voice belongs to Assertive sentence, it is changed into passive voice as follows.

1. Her father sells fried rice in the market.
= Fried rice is sold by her father in the market.

2. We did not see her in the market.
= She was not seen by us in the market.

3. She is making a cup of tea for me.
= A cup of tea is being made for me by her.

4. They are playing cricket in the field.
= Cricket  is being played by them in the field.

5. He wrote something on the blackboard.
= Something was written on the blackboard by him.

6. He gave up smoking forever.
= Smoking was given up by him forever.

7. My mother knows her well.
= She is well known to my mother.

8. We invited him to the party.
= He was invited to the party by us.

9. She has deleted the message.
= The message has been deleted by her.

10. They are singing the song.
= The song is being sung by them.

11. The man had to finish the work before going there.
= The work had to be done by the man before going there.

12. She tried this many times.
= This was tried many times by her.

13.Her father will sell the fruits in the market.
= The fruits will be sold by her father in the market.

14. The teacher was teaching us the lesson.
= The lesson was being taught us by the teacher.

15. The girls were weaving the Bihuwans.
= The Bihuwans were being woven by the girls.

16. The women are preparing rice bear for the Bihu.
= Rice bear is being prepared for the Bihu by the women.

17. He did not edit the video.
= The video was not edited by him.

18. She has not posted the letter till now.
= The letter has not been posted by her till now.

19. You must help her with money.
= She must be helped by you with money.

20. I told them not to play in the sun.
= They were told by me not to play in the sun.


VOICE CHANGE OF INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE 

The sentences that make a question are called Interrogative Sentences. Interrogative sentences always start with an auxiliary verb or some wh question words. Interrogative sentences are of two kinds. They are -   


  • Yes no question
  • Wh question
Yes No Question

The question that can be answered with the words Yes or No are called Yes no question .
Example:-

a) Do you like coffee ?
= Yes, I do /  No, I don't 

b) Can you read the lesson ?
= Yes, I can /  No, I can't.

c) Did you tell her the matter ?
= Yes, I did / No I didn't .

If the active voice belongs to Yes no question of interrogative sentence, it is changed into passive voice as given below.

1. Do you like to play kabaddi ?
= Is Kabaddi liked to play by you ?

2. Does she visit the temple regularly ?
= Is the temple visited by her regularly ?

3. Are the girls watering the flowers ?
= Are the flowers being watered by the girls ?

4. Can you  play cricket ?
= Can cricket be played by you ?

5. Have they taken the ticket from the counter ?
= Has the ticket been taken from the counter by them ?

6. Will you deposit the money today ?
= Will the money be deposited by you today ?

7. Were they playing cricket in the field ?
= Was cricket being played by them in the field ?

8. Should I answer the question ?
= Should the question be answered by me ?

9. Shall we invite her father to the meeting ?
= Will her father be invited to the meeting by us ?

10.  Should we  visit them ?
= Should they be visited by us ?

11. Does she read novel ?
= Is the novel read by her ?

12. Are the girls reading the novel ?
= Is the novel being read by the girls ?

13. Is she making a cup of tea for me ?
= Is a cup of tea being made for me by her ?

14. Was I not taking him to the market ?
= Was he not be taking to the market by me ?

15. Will she solve the problem ?
= Will the problem be solved by her ?

16. Had they written the letter to the headmaster ?
= Had the letter been written to the headmaster by you ?

17. Did you see my mother in the market ?
= Was my mother seen by you in the market ?

18. Would he do the work ? 
= Would the work be done by you ?

19. Can you tell me the matter ?
= Can the matter be told me by you ?

20. Will you meet my mother tonight ?
= Will my mother be met by you tonight ?

21. Could he solve the sum ?
= Could the sum be solved by him ?

22. Did they show you the gift ?
= Was the gift shown you by them ?

23. Were the girls rehearsing the drama ?
= Was the drama being rehearsed by the girls ?

24. Could you help me ?
= Could I be helped by you ?

25. Are you selling the vegetables ?
= Are the vegetables being sold by you ?

26. Have they told the matter of that girl ?
= Has the matter of that girl been told by them ?

27. Was I taking a cup of tea with them ?
= Was a cup of tea being taken by me with them ?

28. Does he know it ?
= Is it known to him ?

29. Does she prefer coffee ?
= Is coffee preferred by her ?

30. Will they ask her the questions now ?
= Will the question be asked her by them now ?

31.  Had they had their breakfast before me ?
= Had their breakfast been had before me ?

VOICE CHANGE OF WH QUESTIONS

The questions that can not be answered with the words 'yes' or 'no' are called Wh questions.
                            or
The questions that start with the wh question words are called Wh questions . The Wh questions words are What, Which, Who, Whom, When, Why, Where, How etc.

Example

  • Who is your father ?
  • Where do you live ?
  • What is your father ?
If the active voice belongs to the Wh-question of the Imperative sentence, it is changed into passive voice as given below.

1. Where do they play cricket ?
= Where is cricket played by them ?

2. How did you solve the sum ?
= How was the sum solved by you ?

3. What are you doing ?
= What is being done by you ?

4. What are they playing ?
= What is being played by them ?

5. How will you solve the problem ?
= How will the problem be solved by you ?

6. Where will she meet me ?
= Where shall I be met by her ?

7. Which book did you present her in her birthday ?
=  Which book was she presented by you in her birthday ?

8. Which game do you like most ?
= Which game is liked by you most ?

9. When were the girls watering the flowers ?
= When were the flowers being watered by the girls ?

10.Whom did you tell the matter ?
=  Whom was told the matter by you ?

11.How can she sing it so well ?
= How it can be sung so well by her ?

12.Which festival does she like most ?
= Which festival is liked by you most ?

13.What is the student writing on the blackboard ?
= What is being written by the student on the blackboard ?

14. How many books did you give her ?
= How many books were given her by you ?

15. When do you  play cricket ?
= When is cricket played by you ?

16. Why did you not tell me the matter ?
= Why was I not told the matter by you ?

 The active voice starting with the word ' Who ' , is changed into passive voice as given below .

1. Who told you the matter ?
= By whom was you told the matter ?

2. Who has broken the glass of the 
window ?
= By whom has the glass of the window been broken ?

3. Who will tell her the matter ?
= By whom will she be told the matter ?

4. Who will receive the guest ?
= By whom will the guest be received ?

5. Who posted the letters to that address ?
= By whom were the letters posted to that address ?


6. Who will preside over the meeting ?
= By whom will the meeting be presided over ?

7. Who plays cricket on the bank of the river ?
= By whom was cricket played on the bank of the river ?

8. Who received the letters ? 
= By whom was the letter received ?

9. Who has delivered the speech so nicely in the meeting ?
= By whom has the speech been delivered so nicely in the meeting ?

10. Who must do it by this evening ?
= By whom must it be done by the evening ?

11. Who was cooking rice for the guests ?
= By whom was rice being cooked for the guests ?

12.Who liked her singing very much ?
= By whom was her singing being liked very much ?

13. Who saw them playing cricket on the bank of the public pond ?
= By whom was they seen playing cricket on the bank of the public pond ?

14. Who could manage him within  a second ?
= By whom could he be managed within a second?

15. Who will compromise with him ?
=  By whom will he be compromised with ?

16. Who can trust a liar ?
= By whom can a liar be trusted ?

17. Who laugh at them ?
= By whom were they laugh at ?

18. Who wrote the letter so illegibly ?
= By whom was the letter written so illegibly ?

19. Who request you to help me ?
= By whom were you requested to help me ?

20. Who can not but love her ?
= By whom can she be not but loved ?

  
VOICE CHANGE OF IMPERATIVE SENTENCE

The sentences that make us request, order and advice are called Imperative sentence. Imperative sentences are always in present tense. Imperative sentences start with a verb or some requested words while Assertive sentences start with a subject and Interrogative sentences with an auxiliary verb. Though the subject in the imperative sentences can not be seen, there is a single subject to all the imperative sentences, and it is ' You' .

Example

a) Water the flowers.
b) Copy the note.
c) Please help her.
d) Don't go there.

Not all imperative sentences are necessarily commands. They can be social expressions. For example
  • Get well soon
  • Have a nice day.
  • Have a sweet dream.

Imperative sentences are of three kinds. They are -

i) Sentences of request
ii) Sentences of order
iii) Sentences of advice 

      SENTENCES OF ORDER

The sentences that make an order are called sentences of order. They starts with an verb.
Example
 i) Don't go there.
ii) Start the machine.
iii) Post the letter.
iv) Receive the guest.

If the active voice belongs to the sentences of order of the Imperative sentence, it is changed into passive voice as follows.

Active voice:- Verb + Obj

Passive voice:- Let + Obj + Be + Verb3

Example-

a) Open    the    door
     verb        obj   

= Let   the door   be   opened.
               obj                    verb3

b) Sing         the    song .
     verb            obj

= Let  the  song     be   sung .

c) Tell     him  to sing the song.
    verb     obj          com

= Let    he    be   told      to sing the song.
            obj         verb3       com

d) Give    him      the pen.
     verb     obj          obj

= Let    the pen  be   given     him.
               obj             verb3     obj  

e) Sell    the vegetables   in the market.
    verb        obj                     com

=  Let   the vegetables  be  sold     in the market.
                 obj                    verb3        com          

f) Solve the sum.
= Let the sum be solved.

g) Cut the tree.
= Let the tree be cut.

h) Meet the man in the morning.
= Let  the man be met in the morning.

i) Delete  her number from my mobile.
= Let her number be deleted from my mobile.

j) Finish the work now.
= Let the work be done now.

k) Rehearse the drama again and again.
= Let the drama be rehearsed again and again.

l) Tell him not to go there.
= Let he be not told to go there.

m) Recite the poem.
= Let the poem be recited.

n) Decorate the stage for the function.
= Let the stage be decorated for the function.

o) Drive the car.
= Let the car be driven.

p) Request him to help me.
= Let he be requested to help me.

q) Welcome the guests to the party.
= Let the guest be welcomed to the party.

r) Repair my car in no time.
= Let my car be repaired in no time.

s) Take the glass of juice.
= Let the glass of juice be taken.

t) Choose one of them .
= Let one of them be chose.

u) Distribute the mangoes among the boys.
= Let the mangoes be distributed among the boys.

v) Complete the task .
= Let the task be completed.

w) Invite only two guests to the meeting.
= Let only two guest be invited to the meeting.
x) Compose the music.
= Let the music be composed.

y) Check the spelling before printing it out.
= Let the spelling be checked before printing it out.

z) Change the voice given below.
= Let the voice be changed given below.

   Passive to Active

a) Let the message be sent.
= Send the message.

b) Let she be requested to sing the song.
= Request her to sing the song.

c) Let the question be answered.
= Answer the question.

d) Let the letter be replied to.
= Reply to the letter.

e) Let the voice be changed.
=  Change the voice be changed.

f) Let me help her.
= Let she be helped by me.

g) Let us arranged the party.
= Let the party be arranged by us.

h) Let he be taken care of by me.
= Let me take care of him.

i) Let the money be spent by her.
= Let her spend the money.

j) Let the text be edited.
= Edit the text. 

k) Let the water be boiled.
= Boil the water.

m) Let the sentences be combined.
= Combine the sentences.

n) Let the call be received.
= Receive the call.

o) Let he be sent for to the meeting.
= Send him for to the meeting.

p) Let the button be clicked.
= Click the button.

* Active Voice Starting with 'Let' is Changed into Passive Voice as Follows.

Active :- Let + Sub + verb + object

Passive :- Let + Obj + be + verb3 + by + sub

Example:-

a) Let  her  finish  the work.
     let  sub   verb    obj

= Let  the work  be  finished by her.
   let +  obj  +    be +  verb3 + by + sub

b) Let me  start  the machine.
           sub  verb    obj

= Let the machine  be  started  by   me.
    let   +     obj     +be+ verb3 +by + obj

c) Let the student solve the sum.
= Let the sum be solved by the students.

d) Let the man  help me.
= Let I be helped by the man.

e) Let The students hold the meeting.
= Let the meeting be held by the students.

f) Let us visit the place.
= Let the place be visited by us.


There are some sentences which are changed into passive voice some different ways.
Examples;-

a) Go to the market.
= You are told to go to the market.

b) Come here.
= You are told to come here.

c) Sit down here.
= You are told to sit down here.

d) You are told to stand up.
= Stand up.

e) You are told to run fast.
= Run fast.

f) Don't laugh.
= You are told not to laugh.

g) Don't cry.
= You are told not to cry.

h) Work hard.
= You are told to work hard.

SENTENCES OF REQUEST

The sentences that make a request  are called sentences of request. This kind of sentences starts with requested words like Please, kindly etc. If the imperative sentences start with the word please, they are changed into passive voice as follows.

A.V. - Please .............
P.V.- You are requested to .............

A.V. - Please don't .......
P.V. - You are requested not to ........ 

Example:-

a) Please tell me your name.
You are request to tell me your name.

b) Please go there.
You are requested to go there.

c) Please don't go there.
= You are requested not to go there.

d) Please make a cup of tea for me.
You are requested to make a cup of tea for me.

e) Please don't tell her so.
You are requested not to tell her so.

f) Please don't have it.
= You are requested not to have it.

g) Please look up the word in the dictionary.
You are requested to look up the word in the dictionary.

h) Please meet me soon.
You are requested to meet me soon.

i) Please take care of her health.
You are requested to take care of her health.

j) Please sing a song on my request.
You are requested to sing a song on my request.

k) Please don't touch it.
You are requested not to touch it.

l) Please don't laugh.
You are requested not to laugh.

m) Please write down my word.
= You are requested to write down my word.

n) Please make a cup of tea for me.
You are requested to make a cup of tea for me.


PASSIVE TO ACTIVE

a) You are requested to make a cup of tea for me .
=Please make a cup of tea for me.

b) You are requested not to have it
=Please don't have it.

c)You are requested not to make a noise.
=Please don't make a noise.

d) You are requested not to post the letter.
= Please don't post the letter.

e) You are requested to console her mother.
=Please console her mother.

f) You are requested to recall it again.
=Please recall it again.

g)You are requested not to disturb me.
=Please don't disturb me.

h) You are requested not to laugh.
=Please don't laugh.

i) You are requested not to copy this.
=Please don't copy this.

j) You are requested to accompany him to the market.
=Please accompany him to the market.
   

SENTENCES OF ADVICE

The sentences that make an advice are called Sentences of Advice. If the active voice belongs to the sentences of order of the Imperative sentence, it is changed into passive voice as given below. If the sentence is assertive; the passive voice starts with the phrase " You are requested to " while in case of negative sentence, the passive voice starts with the phrase " You are requested not to " and then the rest part of the sentence is added same to same. 

Examples;-

a) Take care of your health.
= You are advised to take care of your health.

b) Be kind to the poor.
= You are advised to be kind to the poor.

c) Don't waste your time.
You are advised not to waste your time.

d) Don't boast of your health.
You are advised not to boast of your health.

e) Don't tell a lie.
= You are advised not to tell a lie.

f) Always be positive.
You are advised to be positive always.

g) You are advised to beware of false friends.
Beware of false friends.

h) You are advised not to look down upon the poor.
= Don't look down upon the poor.

i) You are advised not to trust a liar.
= Don't trust a liar.
