              Later on Ramanandha Sastry became the priest of the Rameswaram temple. He took over the priesthood from his father. Aravindan went into the business of arranging transport for visiting pilgrims; and Sivaprakasan became a catering contractor for the Southern Railways.

b) What did Kalam's father use to avoid?

= Kalam's father used to avoid all inessential comforts and luxuries. But he never neglected in providing his children all necessities, in terms of food, medicine or clothes.

c) What qualities did Kalam inherit from his parents ?

= Kalam inherited honesty and self- discipline from his father; and from his mother he inherited faith in goodness and deep kindness. 

d) Where did Kalam's family live?

= Abdul Kalam belonged to a middle-class family. His family lived in the island town of Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras State.

e) Give a brief account of Abdul Kalam.

= Abdul Kalam was born into a middle-class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram. Though he belonged to a middle class family, he had a very secure childhood, both materially and emotionally. In his childhood he had three very close friends. They were Ramanadha Sastry, Aravindan and Sivaprakasan.

= The new teacher could not stomach a Hindu priest's son sitting with a Muslim boy. So, he asked Kalam to go and sit on the back bench. It left a lasting impression on him.

= When Abdul Kalam left home for higher studies, his father consoled his wife not to be upset. He told her that her children are not her children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through her but not from her. She may give them her love but not her thoughts. For they have their own thoughts.
